The Ghost of Media Present

Even The Atlantic admits that this fiasco in Libya is “wildly unpopular.” Why, then, is the mainstream media still not covering it? Not only are they not covering it in a falsely favorable light for Obama but they just aren’t bothering to cover it at all. What’s more shocking regarding the lack of media coverage is that Congress, on a rare bi-partisan level, is angered by this illegal war. Congress passed a resolution – and we all know just how effective resolutions are – with heavy Republican and Democrat support. We’ll see just how seriously the president views it.

I’m just so sick and tired of the lack of honest media coverage. Why on earth is Obama getting this free ride? The nation hasn’t been so deep into the toilet since the actual Great Depression; yet, every decision he makes – and they are nearly all the absolute wrong decisions - is either heartily approved by the MSM or ignored in its coverage. Historically, one of the very best aspects of America’s political power structure has been the media’s ability to sniff out and hold to account the corrupt, ridiculous, and inept. There has always been those news outlets, though, that have played favorites; still, the bulk of news sources had remained faithful to their role as the fourth estate.

When did it all change? With Clinton? I don’t think so. It could have been during Bush’s presidency, and to some degree I would say this is certainly so. Really, though I can’t prove it without doing some serious research into the subject, I would bet dollars to donuts that the MSM put all its eggs into Obama’s basket and as he goes, so they go. Obama ran a great campaign, no doubt about it. He raised a ton of money, America’s collective attitude could hardly have been more ripe for a half-black/half-white (seemingly) liberal with a (seemingly) clear vision for the future, and he had the MSM do his televised and print campaigning for him. I really think that the MSM sold out to him and now that there clearly exists the need for the fourth estate to do its job, it can’t lest they admit to having no credibility.

I predict that, before the 2012 election, the mainstream media will have to make the choice to either stay in Obama’s pocket and hope that they can pull him through and that he is somehow able to make enough sound decisions to get the country back to where it was when he started or bale on him in an effort to save what’s left of their names and do so in time to completely separate themselves from the fallout of his eventual loss in the election. Even rabid libs can see that Obama is a huge failure, not that they’ll ever admit it. The MSM is already losing ground in popularity daily to alternative media and they really can’t afford to double down on the success of the Titanic after having hit the iceberg. Then again, trying to rationalize liberals’ decision-making is pretty damned futile.
At any rate, here are some fun double standards from Iraq that you won’t find being applied to Libya. I could have added many, many more. I stopped when I realized that there were too many such quotes. Also, check out the links, fun stuff:

“A state of war is not a blank check for the President when it comes to the rights of the Nation’s citizens.” — Sandra Day O’Connor, June 28, 2004, in Hamdi v Rumsfeld.  What an interesting thought.
“I’ve indicated that it [the American decision to invade Iraq] was not in conformity with the UN charter from our point of view, and from the charter point of view it was illegal.” — former UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan, September 15, 2004, quoted in MacAskill and Borger, “Iraq War Was Illegal and Breached UN Charter, Says Annan,” Guardian, September 16, 2004.  Bush goes to war with an overwhelming vote of approval from Congress but with no support from the U.N. and is a criminal. Obama goes to war with zero congressional support or affirmation, but is lead by the nose by NATO and all is hunky-dory.

“I feel that we have been lied to and betrayed by this administration. . . . It is the duty, the obligation of every soldier, and specifically the officers, to evaluate the legality, the truth behind every order — including the order to go to war. . . . [The] war in Iraq violates our democratic system of checks and balances. . . . It usurps international treaties and conventions that by virtue of the Constitution become American law. The wholesale slaughter and mistreatment of the Iraqi people with only limited accountability is not only a terrible moral injustice, but a contradiction to the Army’s own Law of Land Warfare. My participation would make me party to war crimes.” — First Lieutenant Ehren Watada, June 6, 2006, quoted in Bernton, “Officer at Fort Lewis Calls Iraq War Illegal, Refuses Order to Go,” Seattle Times, June 7, 2006.  So, at day 91 of the war in Libya, will “every soldier, and specifically the officers” pack their bags and head home?
“The American forces, when they entered . . . protected all the oil wells . . . but . . . paid no attention to Iraq’s heritage.” — Abdul Zahra Talaqani, media director for the Iraqi Ministry for Tourism and Archaeology, January 20, 2008, quoted in Zavis, “‘Ancient Civilization … Broken to Pieces’,” Los Angeles Times, January 22, 2008.  This one is particularly great, especially considering that Libya is the only place Obama has decided to get involved and it is the only place that has any leverage on the U.S. with regard to oil. Then again, Obama “has his reasons” for getting knee- deep in Libya and nowhere else.

“If the president takes the country to war on a lie where thousands of American soldiers die horrible, violent deaths and over 100,000 innocent Iraqi civilians, including women and children, even babies are killed, the punishment obviously has to be . . . severe.” — Vincent Bugliosi, The Prosecution of George W. Bush for Murder (2008), p.82.  What about taking the nation into an unconstitutional war?
